2018 sea kayak Leader (4*) Training & Paddler Development WITH Roger Chandler & GUest coaches John Willacy and nick Cunliffe
11 day developmental programe
2018 dates TBC
Have you ever wanted more time to develop your personal paddling, incident management, assisted/self-rescue skills and leadership, with a progression towards working in moderate tidal waters? If so, in November 2017 we will be running our two week course which will prepare you for the British Canoeing Union 4 Star Performance and Leadership award. If the award is not your priority and you are interested in developing your sea kayaking skills, the course offers the opportunity to work on your own personal development goals.
We work with a mixed skills group to provide personal skills development, leadership opportunities and progressive exposure to 4 star assessment conditions, if ability allows. Everyone is allowed to develop at their own pace and the more you prepare yourself for the course before hand, the more you will gain. As the group will have varying sea kayaking skills, we will work on different environments to cater for the needs of all the paddlers. This means that some days we will be working in 3 Star environments providing skills development to some and leadership opportunities to others. For the more advanced in the group, we have a number of specific days that will provide an opportunity to experience the top end of assessment conditions.

This sea kayaking course takes place in Anglesey which provides excellent training grounds in the Menai Straits (often protected from winds and swell); fast tidal waters along its many tide races and dynamic coastal conditions with waves.
The course runs from Monday to Friday both weeks and during the first Saturday. It includes:
- Intensive incident management training
- Personal Paddling Skills Development
- Assessment Conditions Practice Modules
- Coastal Navigation & Tidal Planning Theory Course
- Foundation Coaching the Mind Award Theory Course
- Effective Forward Paddling Module with John Willacy
- Three days of 1:3 student ration with Roger Chandler and his guest coach Nick Cunliffe
- 7 days with 1:6 student ratio with Roger Chandler plus an additional safety kayaker in support.
- Opportunities to split the group into smaller pods to work on different skills as needed and required.
In 2017 we will have expert & record breaker guest coaches who will deliver some of the modules above.
Nick Cunliffe will be sharing three sessions with Roger to give a 1 to 3 ratio. Nick is a level 5 BCU coach with 25 years experience. Follow this link for more information on Nick.
John Willacy has circumnavigated the UK and broken many other records. He will be coaching the Effictive Forward Paddling Module. Follow this link for more information on John.
The group will be staying at Anglesey Outdoors bunk house, during the programme.
This is a unique and special opportunity to take time off and fully concentrate on developing your paddling and furthering your skills. The progression will allow for a good mix of conditions and time to reflect over the period. Developing a helpful reflective practice is a key element to becoming an effective and skilled 4 star leader and will also further assist when you leave the programme with a detailed action plan.
Open to six participants only although it is possible to share a place with another paddler so each does one week. Paddlers need to be at least 3 Star performance ability which means they have a current flat water roll and self-rescue, can rescue another in 0.5 - 1 metre swell, paddle in a bf3 (9-12mph) wind form any direction and surf 0.5 - 1 metre swell.
Cost: £699 with £250 deposit.
Please note that accommodation is not included. It is £11 per night at Anglesey Outdoors.
