INTRODUCTION TO TIDE RACES WITH HOWARD JEFFS in anglesey
2018 dates tbc
Tidal race or tidal rapid is a natural occurrence whereby a fast moving tide passes through a constriction resulting in the formation of waves, eddies and hazardous currents.
The 3 day sea kayaking course will have a part theory and lots of time in the sea. The course is an excellent way of learning how to play on tide races in a safe and supervised manner, gain boat control and develop confidence in fast flowing tides. Tide races are an essential experience of sea kayaking.
The course takes place in Anglesey which has some of the most spectacular and famous tide races in the country. We will be camping close to the beach in a campsite used by many kayakers. It even has its own pub called 'The Paddlers' Return'.
On the first day of the course we will go to the Menai Straits to practice skills on fast flowing water. We will learn how to break in and out of eddies and ferry glide effectively in strong currents. During the second day, we will visit one of the tide races and put into practice the skills we developed during the previous day. The last day, and depending on how everyone is feeling, we will visit another tide race and/or combine it with a day paddle.
You will have the opportunity to develop and practise the following skills:
- Understanding the mechanics of tide races
- Tideal planning for tide races
- Paddling your sea kayak with and against fast flowing water
- Identifying eddies and eddie lines
- Breaking in and out of eddies
- Ferry gliding in fast currents
- Assisted and self-rescues
- Gaining experience of kayaking in tide races
Depending on the weather conditions we may visit the races at Rhoscolyn, Penrhyn Mawr or the North Stack.
We finish about lunch time on the third day.
The price is only for the course. We can source a sea kayak if you need one for £25 per day, and we will be arranging car shares before the trip. Camping is £10 per night.
